Enclosure of the commons/colonialism by the rich and their corporations, or by governments on their behalf, leads to depletion of vital resources as well as externalization of the economic and environmental costs of resource exploitation/monetization, which lead toward socioeconomic collapse, climate destabilization and the sixth mass extinction.*
These outcomes are consequences of greed, specifically the will to speed up entropic degradation of ecosystems in order to gain and hold temporary advantage over others.
Entropy in the earth's ecosystems cannot ultimately be reversed; its increase is an ultimate law of all things. But within human time scales, the rate of suffering from entropic degradation can be slowed by consciously applying generosity, knowledge, policy and work to protect human and ecosystem health and equity from the greedy. If we are so inclined.

* Extinction is inevitable, as is death, the highly localized form of extinction. It's, in the long run, not "bad," just the way things are. We cannot prevent it, but as animals, we tend to desire to put it off. This desire is built into us by DNA so that we can produce and train the next generation to produce and train the generation after them. This is for the DNA's benefit, not ours, but we certainly tend to go along. We like the endorphins. That's not to say there aren't, perhaps, preferable ways of being, even if they aren't what we were "put" here for.
